Worried about your Singapore Airlines cabin crew skin check test ?
One of the most common questions I heard from cabin crew hopefuls is if a cabin crew needs to have perfect skin. In fact, I have crew friends who had little scars… but after make up… they are almost invisible.
I also have a friend who even went to the interview without any make up ! got through the whole SIA interview process and only had her first make up lesson during training !!!
so.. heres the good news is..at least in my opinion and experience from meeting and flying with so many crews.. perfect skin ? Not exactly… but if you can hide your flaws and “prevent detection”.. then all the more better. It just help to show your character and also help radiate your glow.
So, how do you hide your flaws for your cabin crew interview ?
light scars, blemishes, dark rings etc…
I personally use a concealer call Covermark japan. It is by far, the most effective concealer in covering my flaws.. in fact, i used it to cover my light scar during my cabin crew interview 4 years ago… and yes.. I got through =P
I personally use covermark basic formula. “a solid paste type long lasting waterproof foundation” – if you want to find the exact one I use.
Again, this brand is really very effective.. at least in helping me cover my flaws. In fact, from what I’ve heard, this brand has often topped Japan’s best selling cosmetics.
Do note that it is different from Covermark USA… though it was brunched out from there.. Covermark Japan moved out on its own and created its very own cosmetic sometime back..
ok, so now you have no qualms about skin flaws and how to go about covering them. hee hee
If you are from Singapore, then you can find it in Bugis Junction and Takashimaya, under the cosmetic section.
Now.. here is the bad news… it can’t be found in Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and India…
So, for my friends in Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Korea… you might want to trouble your friend from Singapore to help you get one and send it to you.. I mean.. that’s how I see it.
Another way is to go online to purchase. and the closest thing I have found online is this shop that sells covermark brands : Covermark.
I hope this post helps and for girls who really want to conceal your flaws… I strongly recommend trying out this brand.. and believe me.. you’ll fall in love with it.. hee.

Hi Kristine, has been following your blog and find it very helpful and informative! Anyway i would like to ask if i manage to conceal my scars using concealer (i’ve gotten some scars on my hands) do i still have to fill in the application form stating that there’re scars on my hands cause one section of it requires us to declare. thanks a lot!

hi kristine, appreciate your efforts on the website!
just wanna ask if it’s possible for me to get in at all, if i have a 1×0.5 cm scar on my hand?
is skin check very hard to pass even for the guys?
thank,

hi kristine,
thanks for the information, apreciate your effort here.
just a question though, is there any chances for a guy who has a 1×0.5cm more or less scar on his hand? looks more like a birthmark now, got it from young. are the skin check very hard for guys as well?
thanks again!
kelvin
By: kelvin on February 27, 2010
at 2:50 pm
depends if you can hide them.
For guys, they might not be so strict because you all will be wearing shirt and jacket during flight and in addition, the swim test is taken out so… you might not get “check” on the hand..
In other words.. if you can cover them during your interview as you will most likely be wearing short and tie for the interview.. you might just scrape through too ^^ don’t worry about it..
But if it is very visible on the “hand” or “palm” .. then.. ya.. it is going to decrease your chance because that is where the passenger will be seeing when you serve meals etc =)

Hi Kristine, am jus wondering does the size matters?? I mean in a way that many crews are either petite and slim or tall and silm. Jus wondering does meaty, heavy bones female stand a chance?
By: Valerie on February 27, 2010
at 3:16 pm
As long as you have a healthy BMI…
well.. the petite body is an illusion created by the kebaya.. because it is “tailored” specifically for you.. hee.
So.. yes.., depends on how you present yourself on the actual day of the interview, I would say, all females stand a chance ^^

hi kristine ur blog is really awesome!! š maybe u could share with us more abt the skin check round like what is it that the beauticians are checking for?
i understand that they also check ur lower arm? i also have a brown birthmark patch on my left wrist (abt 2 x 1 inch) will it affect my chance of getting in, in ur opinion? š
By: Dawn on February 27, 2010
at 5:00 pm
ha ha thanks..
birthmark patch.. is it very close to your skin tone ? if it is, then maybe you may be able to go through.
You can also try lightening it with a concealer before you go for your interview ^^
and seriously, skin check test really depends… because one of my friend got scrutinized very badly for her skin… but she still goes through.. so.. I am not too sure about it.
But in my opinion, as long as you don’t have serious acne or blemish outbreak.. and can be covered with make up.. then should be generally alright… ^^

thanks for sharing Kristine
i use covermark concealer and must say it’s really effective in coverage.may i know what makeup brand do u use for SIA crew? i heard it’s lancome? i often envy how beautiful and flawless SIA girl makeup is, can you please share a bit more on the makeup? thank you so much!
By: nobi on February 28, 2010
at 6:01 am
Yes, its lancom,
but its not what I used… in fact.. Lancome is the “choosen brand” that you will be introduced to in your training.
however, most stewardess use their own brand after they start flying so.. I can’t really vouch that everybody use the same brand of lancome..
Make up… SIA standard ? As thick as possible =P It has something to do with the lighting of the cabin…
By: cabincrewkristine on February 28, 2010
at 9:30 am
thanks dear. ok have an idea..as thick as possible..! LOL
but still i found SIA girl makeup to be flawless and perfect even in cabin air pressure and after touch down, can you please share what brand u use please? i wanna zoom down to the products you use to achieve that look
thanks!!
By: nobi on March 1, 2010
at 9:32 am
err.. as thick as possible is.. when you are flying.. pls don’t do that for your interview…
I use covermark from japan… different stewardess use different brands and yes.. some bought brands from overseas.
and no… actually… even if the recommended brand by he company is lancome… few girls actually use it… haha.

Hi Kristine, wow ur blog is fantastic!! š
Would like to ask if u could recommend any skin care products for oily and sensitive skin? As my T-zone gets naturally oily and I have to use oil facial blotters every hour or so. Will it affect my chances in the skin care round?
By: lina on February 28, 2010
at 1:18 pm
Lancome does sell a few varieties.. but most of the make up I use comes from Covermark japan..
Actually… the more oil blotters you use.. the more your skin will produce oil… and you should try to cut down on that my dear.
and no.. it won’t as long as you know how to hide it or so…
By: cabincrewkristine on February 28, 2010

By: Xin on February 28, 2010

I suppose so.. blemishes and pimple breakouts too
They never tell us what they check for…. cos.. I actually see a lot different skin types also go through.. but just that all dun have outbreaks or very obvious scars, dark rings etc

For the skin check, other than pimples and scars, do they look out for pigment spots and moles too? Generally I have good skin but I have a few light brown spots and i wonder whether it can be covered..
And what attire will you recommend for the interview?
Thank you so much!
By: Ting on March 4, 2010

They also look out for tattoos and dry skin etc..

Hi Kristine! I’ve been following this for some time already š
Would like to enquire, if i have a few blemishes due to some body acne slightly below the back of my neck, will the kebaya be able to cover?
Cuz from what i understand, the kebaya is a little scoop at the back.
Thank you! š
By: Chyanne on March 7, 2010
at 10:50 am
hmmm… depending on how low your acne is…
the scoop behind is about 2 inches below the part where the back of your neck connects your shoulder. But then again… it all depends if you are able to cover it with the kebaya and if the “beautician” sees it…
By: cabincrewkristine on March 7, 2010

I have a 1inch birthmark under my neck and the colour is very obvious. Do u think i have a chance to go through the skin checks. What do u recommend?
By: hidd on March 13, 2010
at 4:02 am
As far as I am concern… try to conceal it no matter what…
As I am not the “beautician” checker.. I have no say over this.. I may think yes.. but she might think no..
The safest is to conceal it…

In a way… yes you should cover it up… I
don’t want to hide any false hopes but be prepared because high chances are you may be faulted for that condition and not make it through.
But don’t take my word for it… until you try and did your best…

Hey dear,
During your Kebaya round, yes, The Kebaya got a long slit and you will be asked to do some walking, which will expose some “leg skin”… but again, since it is a continuous movement, it may not be obvious if you try to hide and cover it.
Hope this helps ^^

Hi! Your blog is great in providing practical tips for those who want to become SIA stewardess. I’d be going for this Saturday’s interview and have some questions:
1) I saw that in your comments, blemishes, scars or pigmentation are not allowed on any SIA stewardess’ face. Do that include moles? I have 2 moles that are not easily concealed on my face as they are quite dark coloured. Should i mention that on my application form?
2) For the uniform fitting round, will we be wearing the kebaya with stockings and heels?
3) Is there a weight test during the walk in interview? What is the target range they look for?
4) How long will they call me to go for the rest of interview rounds if I can’t finish the interview rounds on 1 day?
Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon!
3)
By: Christina on June 23, 2010

Moles not included.. you are talking abt the tiny ones right ?
Skin checking is really more for scars, tattoos and senstive skin..
weight test yes, within MAX ideal BMI – 2 is the preference

Hi , I’m only 19 , do you think chances of me being selected is slim due to my age ? Also , I do not have very big blemish problems but since i’m young , I often have pimples coming out here and there but can be treated fast and able to cover with makeup , do you think that will do ? And also , I’m only 158.5 which yes , hit the criteria but do you think it’s still too short to be selected ?

Hi Kristine,
I’m giving the upcoming interview a shot & i got a qn, hope you dont mind answering…
I need to hide scar that is dented inwards (like a hole): How can I pass my skin check round with that kind of flaw?
It’s visible with a normal concealer, so I’m wondering if covermark concealer can actually cover. Can I take a small clump of the concealer and ‘fill’ it up? haha :X
Pls advise!!

Hi Kristine!
I’ve just found your website/blog recently and I have to say that it is absolutely fabulous! So, first up, I have to say kudos for the great job!
I’ll be attempting my first SIA interview on the following Saturday and I realized that I have quite a number of flaws during the skin-check round.
For one, I have natural arm hair which, in my opinion, is slightly thick.
Next, I have some light, relatively faded scars on my left inner lower arm caused by falling off a bicycle when I was a teen. My lower leg suffers from multiple scars caused by insect bites and stuff like that so I’m really really worried.
Lastly, I have slight discolouration and callouses/corns on my big toes -for reasons unknown off- and a slight dust of red dots at the area at my chest where I believe will be exposed after wearing the Kebaya.
I’ll be attempting to cover them up with concealer or BB Cream for scars, while attempting to remove the corns by natural remedies. However due to time constraints -it’s only 1 week away!- and other stuffs such as the arm hair -though I do own an epilator but I’m not really sure if I should use it in such a manner-, I’m not really sure if I’ll be able to make it through! ><
Can you please give me some tips and roughly gauge how much will the flaws above be affected if I fail to remove or conceal them? It will help me so very much!
By the way, I would like to purchase your book but I don't own a debit card and wonders if I can pay you by ATM transfer instead?
Love to hear from you soon and thanks in advance!
Raven
By: Raven on February 10, 2011
at 3:35 pm
Hi Raven,
For the natural arm hair, you just have to go with it. I have to admit, its going to affect the chances BUT pls dun shave just for the interview.. its NOT worth it…
The scar.. erm.. if its visible from the naked eye.. then.. its going to affect your chances
lower leg is not exactly a problem since it can be covered
As for the feet… err.. its also going to affect.. unless you are able to keep it clean and neat..
For all the negatives, do note that these are only opinions of yours only.. whereas they might not be as bad as you think they are.. so.. just go try if you really want the job dear.
Who knows what might happen =)

I am just wondering would a scar from an operation which is at the wrist area affect chances of getting through the interview big time?
And also tattoo near the ending of the neck area going down the back, would it be hidden by the kebaya?

hello, i love your blog and i want to buy your book
before going to the interview.
have a few questions though
do u need to be stripped down to bikini to be checked for skin?
or will they ask to take out shirt or pants?
are we checked in groups or
and is there any swimming exercise conducted to see if you can swim?
I feel like i have ugly toes but no problem with its complexion /
and is there any such thing as being too skinny? since bmi need to be 2 what if its not the ideal bmi.just asking:D

keke.. dear… stripped down ?
Nope dear.. they wun… =)
and nope.. they wun ask you to take out anything… everything is checked based on expose areas.. ie, neck line, upper back, anything below knee and elbow, face etc. =)
and for swimming… you will only go through the swim test during training… and not in the interview itself. Oh.. and you dun need to know how to swim to be a crew =)

Hi Kristine, I bought your book recently and have been busy internalizing it preparing myself for the Dec 01 interview! Guy here btw
Just like to ask u some stuff..
1. I have a slightly raised brown mole in the middle of my eyes, above my nose bridge, about same-sized as a regular mole; will this lower my chances?
2. I have slightly yellow but straight and shiny teeth, internal discoloration. Is that a major deal breaker?
Thanks for your replies! Your book is a great help š

hmmm…
for the mole… I guess i need to really see it to give a more accurate opinion.. but generally, should not be a problem.
As for the teeth… how bad is the discoloration ? If possible, i do suggest going for whitening… as it helps… for smile, as you know it.. is extrememly important..

Hi Kristine, how about large, unsightly open pores that are visible to the naked eye? Are they a guaranteed no-go at the interview too?
Thanks in advance for your time!

Hi Wei,
there is no “guaranteed”… if you do have flaws.. then its really up to you, on how to “win” the heart of the checker.. and get into their good books.. so that they can be slightly lenient..

hi kristine ,
just a quick question . i passed the skin test on the March intake .
However i failed the skin test on June intake .
Are they very mindful about pimples ?
i had a few mini ones , should i leave it or should i try to cover up ?
I’m a male here btw . I am quite puzzled about what’s their standard .

For guys, usually… just leave it.
They are not exactly very mindful about guy’s pimples.. but I would say, the overall apperance you present.. and how the imples may affect it. Ie, if it looks really “inflamed” acne kind, obviously, its going to affect yr chances.

sorry just to add on . i have past medical history . Ex : i fractured my shin bone before during army days but it recovered fully with verified doctor’s letter .
I have scoliosis , but a very minor one . The doctor also claim there isn’t any issue about it .
But im afraid about the medical round for these conditions .

usually, it should be of a matter. They have a certain acceptable for scolosis. But its never released to the public.
