SIA Cabin Crew Interview – Common Mistakes By Hopefuls

Wishing all my friends here a Happy Lunar New Year !

Let’s talk about some common mistakes made by cabin crew hopefuls during their SIA Cabin Crew Interview. I guess I can squeeze in one more post before the Lunar New Year… everyone reading this.. hee.. HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR !!

One of the most common mistake made by cabin crew hopefuls.. especially during their stage 1 of SIA interview is to “over sell” themselves. One of the things I teach in the Cabin Crew Secrets Manual is how to actually make yourself stand out and be picked by the interviewer during your Interview… without falling into this trap of “over selling” but… makes the interviewer notice you “under the radar”.

I believe some of you may have been through the interview and normally, stage one of the cabin crew interview is a self introduction… and some of you probably wonder why, despite some candidates speaking very well and looking very pretty did not get through.

Notice this, it is about self introduction… and not “selling yourself”. So.. some mistakes I’ve heard many make was that they start saying how they can help the company and why they are good for the job etc. Notice again.. self introduction… Not how you can help the company and why you are suited for the job.

Unless you are being asked why you are suited or how you can help the company.. NEVER ever do that.

Remember.. the question is to self introduce yourself, your hobbies, your previous job, what you like etc. It is a personality test and the more interesting you can make your self introduction sound.. the more the interviewer will want to know more about you. So.. technically, there is no right or wrong answer.

So.. why is it that if you sell yourself, you will immediately get booted out ?

The word is Communication.

Obviously if you cannot understand what the interviewer is saying and what the interviewer wants to hear and yet go ahead with your “sales pitch”… it means there is a communication break down.

As an air stewardess or air steward, effective communication is very very important.. especially during meal service… and don’t forget, it is Singapore Airlines we are talking about here and everything must be near perfect… so as to speak.

That is why you see many cabin crew hopefuls drop out during their first round even if they perform and spoke quite well. Obviously, they did not understand what the interviewer wants and go ahead with the wrong “answer”.

I hope this gives you a better idea what to expect and say during your first round script…

Some words to avoid include: “I think i am good for the job because” etc.. (Unless you were being asked)

In other words.. listen and answer according to what the interviewer wants… self intro plus the “extra question”.

The extra question.. can be short… but the more important point is your intro. So.. the average time for the self introduction is about a minute.. and you might want to use 45 sec for the self intro and 15 sec for the “extra question”.

However, if they were to tell you to give a short intro and answer  question.. obviously you don’t want to spend too long on the intro… cos in this case.. it is the question that matters, and you’ll want to give your question a “boost”, as this is where it matters.

Just a general guideline and hope most of you reading here won’t fall into the “over selling” trap.

That’s my cabin crew interview tips for the day ^^

—————

The script and method that I personally used and taught to some of my friends were so effective that all of them were able to make it pass the first round easily at just one attempt. This is due to the fact that the way the script was crafted was able to give what the interviewer wants and also makes you shine like a pearl among others…

  1. What you say makes a lot of sense. Haha. I committed that mistake.

Anyway, I will get the book from you once my card verification on paypal is done.

Have been following your blog. Thank you for all the sharing =)

    Cheers.

  2. hi dear, my friend and i had purchase the tips from you.

jus a qn, in the first round where u noted that we should include why we want to be a cabin crew then followed by why we choose SIA.

just to find out as in one day there are thousands of ppl, if i say that will the interviewer find me very boring as so many ppl will be saying the same thing. eg, i like to serve ppl and SIA is very famous for putting customer first. thanks in advance!! happy cny dear

    • Hi Loh Loh,

I just sent you an email.

Just a note however, that you should add more “spice” to that sentence you just commented… its wayy too common.. you can always add some “flair” to it… something that has some “ummm”.. o “orhm…” hee

You can check out my scripts and see the end.. that was the “ummm” i used.. and its really a powerful sentence no other people would have said.. and definitely.. it brings agreement with the interviewers. ^^

  3. Hi Kristine,

I went to the recruitment last dec and got dropped out at round 2. This time round they placed this big orange spot light directly on our face and start asking us some questions. I heard this is to check how we look like under the dim light in flight and to check how gd our skin are (too much make up or conceal).

Think they changed the kebaya fitting to round 4 as those that got passed round 2 was been proceed to the games.

Asked some of my cabin crew friends and realised that they only started doing the spot light check recently.

    So scary isn’t it!!!

    • Hi Priscilla,

Ya.. they do rotate the stages occassionally… in the past.. the final interview was 5 interviewers to 1 cabin crew… can you magine how stressful it was back then ?

Dim light to Skin condition .. is unlikely.. but how you look under dim light is probably… but the airline seriously… use very thick make up to look good under dim light… haha… so… I don’t suppose is to check how much make up you use or conceal you use =P

That would probably come under Kebaya check ^^

  9. hi Kristine,

  11. Hi dear,

Chanced on your blog while trying to do some research about successfully being part of the cabin crew and I have to say it’s awesome! I’ll get your manual asap 🙂
I have questions for you here, hope you don’t mind 😛

    – do they look at how nice and smooth your body is? because i have a pretty big birthmark on my upper thigh. =( is it a negative point?

    – does it matter if we apply while we’re young (18,19) or when we are 21-23? Because I just turned 18 and I wanna live my dream to be part of the crew but I’m still taking my diploma in hospitality currently. If younger people have more benefits when it comes to applying for the job, maybe I can postpone my studies for it? Or is there like a, part time study part time training kind of thing?

appreciate it if you can reply me =) thanks alot!

    • hi dear…

study is more important at this point of you life… I would urge you to concentrate on your diploma first before deciding if you were to come out to work. In addition, without a diploma, you can’t apply either =)

  12. i am thinking of going for the upcoming CC interview, but my facial complexion is not good. have slight acne problem. i stand at a height of 1.72m weight 68.5kg. Do i still stand a high chance?

    • for a guy, chances are there… =)

      • Hi kristine,

Thanks for ur fast response! i would like to know if the skin test is strict for guys? And, my BMI now measure 23.2 which exceeds the healthy range, so was thinking would they eliminate me just for exceeding?

        Good day,
        boyboy =)

      • err.. yes..

        they would…

maybe.. you would like to drop a few pounds before the interview ?? =)

  13. are cabin crew allowed to keep their fringe down?
can it be kept just above the eyebrow or must the face be fully free from hair?

  14. are cabin crew allowed to keep their fringe down?
can it be kept just above the eyebrow or must the face be fully free from hair?

i have a small scar on the forehead

  15. I have one question for you, Hope get your reply,
I get grade D7 in english of SPM but consider pass, and I have diploma cert in hospitality and an experience in field of customer service…but for the requirement of S’pore airline cabin crew is require to get grade B4 in english of SPM, so I still clarify to apply as a cabin crew? Thank you.

  16. hi kristine,
may i know whats the recommended range of BMI for an (SIA) air stewardess?
    thank you (:

  17. Hey Kristine,

Is it possible to apply with pimples scars of my cheeks?
I heard that there are cabin crews who are wearing braces on board too.
Will it be too late to apply at the age of 26?
Communication shouldn’t be a problem for me. I am an extrovert. Love to joke around.

    • hi kenneth,

At 26 for guys, its still generally ok de =)

As for pimple scars.. it would depend on how serious and visible they are.

For braces.. nope… cos usually they dun accept if you have braces on, but some crews do put on invisible braces AFTER they started flying.. usually the ones you cannot see

      • Hey Kristine,

        Thank you for your reply.

To be a cabin crew was my very first ambition. I have been flying with SIA since I was 2. Was really inspired to be one of you guys. Unfortunately, I was corpulent previously. Perhaps, this issue is solved. The only 2 problems left are my pimples scars and braces.

  18. Ughh!!! If only I saw this post earlier! I just committed this mistake today! Most ppl in my group thought that I would pass… Sad…

  19. Ughhh!!! If only I saw this post earlier… I just committed the mistake this morning. Most ppl in my group thought that I would pass… So disappointed
